Apply to use a pump

Introduction

The membership of Rowhedge Allotment Association voted at the AGM on 23 June 2024 to allow plot holders to use battery-operated pumps to fill water butts under certain conditions. This procedure outlines the application process, fees, and tips for reducing water usage. We don't wish to encourage people to use pumps and anyone taking up this offer should consider their water use carefully. Pumps should be used to fill water butts and not used to water a plot with a hose.

Application Process

To apply for permission to use a battery-operated pump, please:

Pay the full plot fee £40 per year

Pay the half plot fee £20 per year

  • Important: Those physically unable to water using a can and in receipt of means-tested benefits should contact the Treasurer to discuss waiving the additional water fee.

Pump usage:

  • Before deciding to use a pump on site please consider  that pumps can use hundreds of litres more water per hour than people using watering cans.
  • Use the pump to fill a water butt and then fill your watering cans from the water butt
  • Pumps may not be attached to hoses to water plots directly (hoses can be used to fill water butts)

Water conservation tips - please try to conserve water as much as possible

  1. Mulching: Apply mulch around plants to retain soil moisture.
  2. Drip Irrigation: Use drip irrigation systems to target water directly to plant roots.
  3. Watering Schedule: Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  4. Rainwater Harvesting: Invest in water butts to collect rainwater.
  5. Soil Improvement: Add compost or organic matter to improve soil water retention.
